Edward Lloyd (Governor of Maryland)

Edward Lloyd ( born July 22, 1779 at Talbot County, Maryland, † June 2, 1834 in Annapolis, Maryland ) was an American politician who represented the state of Maryland in both chambers of the U.S. Congress and 1809-1811 the Governor had.

Early years and political rise

Edward Lloyd was born into a prominent family in his native who has been resident since the early 17th century in Talbot County. He enjoyed a private education in his homeland. His political career began in 1800 with his election to the House of Representatives from Maryland. This mandate he held until 1805. Between 1807 and 1809 he represented his state in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington. There he was nachgerückt for the retiring Joseph Hopper Nicholson.

Governor of Maryland

On 9 June 1809, he was elected by the legislature of Maryland to succeed the resigned on May 6, Robert Wright as the new governor of that state. During the period between May 6 and June 9, 1809 Office of the Governor of Maryland provisionally by James Butcher was administered. A year later, Lloyd was appointed in this position, so that he could remain in office until 16 November 1811. During his tenure, the right to vote was amended to that one in the future after a year stay in the state of Maryland had the right to vote. Until then, it had been two years. The governor supported the trade embargo of the Federal Government under President James Madison against France and England.

Rise in the U.S. Senate

During the war of 1812, Lloyd was an officer in the militia of Maryland. Between 1811 and 1815 he was a member of the Senate of Maryland. In 1818 he was elected as the candidate of the Democratic-Republican Party in the U.S. Senate. He was the successor of Robert Henry Goldsborough. Edward Lloyd remained until his resignation on January 14, 1826 in Congress. In the Senate he was chairman of the committee that dealt with the affairs of the District of Columbia. After his resignation, Ezekiel F. Chambers took his Senate seat.

Between 1826 and 1831 he was again in the Senate of Maryland, in 1826 he was its president. Lloyd died in 1834. Together with his wife Sally Scott Murray he had seven children. His grandson, Henry Lloyd should also be Governor of Maryland 1885-1888.
