Edward Rumsey

Edward Rumsey (* November 5, 1796 in Botetourt County, Virginia; † April 6, 1868 in Greenville, Kentucky ) was an American politician. Between 1837 and 1839 he represented the state of Kentucky in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Even as a child came Edward Rumsey with his parents in the Christian County in Kentucky where he attended schools in Hopkinsville. Then he moved to Greenville. After a subsequent study of law and qualifying as a lawyer, he started to work there in his profession. He also held several local offices. In 1822 he was elected to the House of Representatives from Kentucky.

In the 1830s Rumsey was a member of the Whig party. In the congressional elections of 1836 he was in the second electoral district of Kentucky in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Albert Gallatin Hawes on March 4, 1837. Until March 3, 1839, he was able to spend a term in Congress. During this time his only two children died of scarlet fever. This loss was also a reason that he did not run in 1838.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Rumsey again practiced as a lawyer. He died on 6 April 1868. Rumsey Edward was married to Jane Merrihew Wing since January 5, 1832. From this marriage the two mentioned children came.
