Edward Ruscha

Edward "Ed" Joseph Ruscha (pronounced " Ruschee ", born December 16, 1937 in Omaha, Nebraska) is an American painter, printmaker, photographer and filmmaker. He was known primarily for his work in painting and printmaking.

Life

He attended the Chouinard Art Institute in 1956 in Los Angeles and had his first solo exhibition in 1963 at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles.

Starting in 1962, he published photo books in runs from 400 to 2000 copies. In the imagery was for Ruscha among others, the American photographer Walker Evans a role model. Parallel trends there with Robert Frank, successor in Bernd and Hilla Becher.

Awards

2001 Ruscha was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, 2004 Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London. In addition to numerous national and international awards Ed Ruscha received from Germany on September 2, 2006 Culture Prize of the German Society for Photography ( DGPh ) at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne awarded.
