Edward Smith-Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby

Edward Smith Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby ( born September 12, 1752 Patten House in Preston, † October 21, 1834 in the Derby Chapel at Ormskirk ) was a British politician.

Life and work

He attended Eton College and then Trinity College at Cambridge University. Due to the early death of his father he inherited in 1776 upon the death of his grandfather, Edward Stanley, 11th Earl of Derby its title.

Both in 1783 and again 1806/7 he wore as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster government.

He had near Epsom a good called "The Oakes ". The horse racing from Obsessive planned with his friends 1778 mare race that became known as " Epsom Oaks ." Then, the creation of another race for stallions was considered. On May 4, 1780 first Derby was started. The winner was the favorite Diomed.

The derby, as the most important race for three- year-old mares and stallions, since then performed in countless countries around the world.
