Edward Timms

Edward Timms (* 1937 in Windlesham, England) is research- professor of German at the University of Sussex and Director of the Centre for German - Jewish Studies since its inception.

Research priorities

The wide scope of his interests was already in his inaugural lecture at the University of Sussex in 1994 clearly whose theme was: " The Wandering Jew: A Leitmotif in German Literature and Politics". Since then, he has been involved in the establishment of the Centre for German - Jewish Studies, in which he still participates today, and was especially known for his research on the Jews of Vienna in the early 20th century. Another research focus is on the early history of psychoanalysis. As a research professor at the University of Sussex, he primarily serves the research graduate and doctoral students across a wide array of topics, starting with the "Science of Judaism " to the experiences of the " Kindertransport " children.

  • 2008: Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art, First Class
  • 2008: Grand Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria
  • 2013: Gold Medal for Service to the City of Vienna

Publications

In 1990, he created (along with Ritchie Robertson ) published the annual edition of " Austrian Studies ", published by Edinburgh University Press, from the present 10 editions. The periodical deals with topics ranging from "The Austrian Enlightenment" (1991 ) to " Theodor Herzl and the Origins of Zionism " (1997).

Other important Publikataionen are: " Karl Kraus - Apocalyptic Satirist: Culture and Catastrophe in Habsburg Vienna" ( Yale University Press, 1986) and the publication of the memoirs of Fritz Wittels, entitled " Freud and the Child Woman" ( Yale, 1995).
