Edwards County (Kansas)

Edwards County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Kinsley.

Geography

The County is located just southwest of the geographic center of Kansas and has an area of 1611 square kilometers without significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Pawnee County, Stafford County, Pratt County, Kiowa County, Ford County and Hodgeman County.

History

Edwards County was formed on March 7, 1874 parts of Kiowa County. It was named after John H. Edwards, an American politician.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Edwards County 3449 people in 1455 households and 955 families in Edwards County. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 92.52 percent White, 0.32 percent African American, 0.49 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, and 5.57 percent from other races; 0.78 percent were descended from two or more races. 9.71 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1455 households out of which 28.7 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 56.3 percent were married couples living together, 6.0 percent were single mothers and 34.3 percent were non-families. 32.0 percent of all households were single-person households and 17.3 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.94.

24.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.7 percent 18 to 24 years 25.1 percent between 25 and 44, 22.8 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 20.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 adult women 18 years and older 95.8 males.

The median income for a household was $ 30,530, and the median income for a family was $ 38,250. Males had a median income of $ 27,050, women $ 20,132. The per capita income was $ 17,586. 7.0 percent of families and 10.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
