Edwin Foster Coddington

Edwin Foster Coddington (* June 24, 1870 in Miami County, Ohio, USA, † December 21, 1950 in Columbus (Ohio ), USA ) was an American astronomer and mathematician. He studied at Ohio State University in Columbus until his final 1897. Subsequently, it went for four years to the Lick Observatory. In 1902 he received the doctoral degree at the University of Berlin.

Coddington discovered during his time at the Lick Observatory three asteroids and comets C/1898 L1 ( Coddington - Pauly ). It is also known his recording of the Andromeda nebula. A new nebula discovered Coddington 1898 in the constellation of the Great Bear (Ursa Maior ), the IC received the designation in 2574, but was later referred to as " Coddington Nebula ".

Coddington went back to the U.S., where he received an assistant professorship of mathematics at Ohio State University. In 1925 he became professor of mechanics and worked until his retirement in 1940 mainly in the field of engineering geodesy. He developed various methods of surveying involving stars and the sun. Edwin Foster Coddington died on December 21, 1950 in Columbus.
