Edwin Grienauer

Edwin Grienauer ( born March 7, 1893 in Vienna, † August 21, 1964 ) was an Austrian sculptor and medalist.

Life

Edwin Grienauer is the son of cellist Karl Grienauer and the opera singer Helene Schott. He studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts, having already set up 19 years, his first portrait plaques. In World War I he suffered a Gesichtsverwundung. 1935 Grienauer was awarded the title of "Professor " and taught from 1945 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. His studio was located in Vienna's Prater. He died there in 1964.

The artist was an excellent oarsman and 1927 Austrian champion in the double sculls. He received Olympic medals but not as a rower, but in the art competition for medals and plaques (Gold 1928, Amsterdam, bronze 1948, London)

Works

Grienauer is unique for its coins ( Signature: GRIEN AUER, EC) and medals known, but also created many sculptures that can still be seen today in Vienna. His coins were in circulation in Austria and Liechtenstein. The best-known works are:

  • Value side of a shilling coin ( in circulation from 1959 to 2002 )
  • Picture pages of two- shilling coins, such as Savoy 1936
  • Picture Pages 25 Schilling coins, such as Anton Bruckner 1962
  • Aspect of a 50 Schilling coins of the Tyrolean freedom 1959
  • Medal of the Chamber of Commerce " For loyal service "
  • Medal " For Services to the Republic of Austria "
  • Saint Margaret and the Sacred Heart statues in the church of St. Othmar, Vienna (3rd district)
  • Statue of Mary in the Church of St. Christopher, Baden bei Wien
  • Relief at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna
  • Tabernacle ( in the archive) and floor tiles in the cathedral of St. Stephan, Vienna
  • Carved Crucifix in the church of St. John of Capistrano in Brigittenau, Vienna, around 1960

A catalog raisonné of Grienauer was created either during his lifetime or after his death. It was not until 2003, the Institute for Numismatics, University of Vienna began work Grien Auer's estate. The Institute manages a large part of the numismatic estate as a permanent loan. In addition to medals and coins of this material also contains drawings, models and embossing dies, which illustrate the development steps and different manufacturing techniques of medals.
