Edwin Griswold Nourse

Edwin Griswold Nourse ( born May 20, 1883 in Lockport, New York, † May 7, 1974 in Maryland ) was an American economist, university professor and 1946-1950 first chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers.

Life

After attending a high school in Illinois studied Nourse, a younger brother of the writer Alice Tisdale Hobart, until the Lewis Institute and then at Cornell University, from which he graduated in 1906. In 1915, he earned a Philosophiae Doctor ( Ph.D.) in the subjects of economics and sociology at the University of Chicago.

Following this, he first took up a professorship at the University of South Dakota and was thereafter from 1915 to 1918 professor at the University of Arkansas. Then he was 1918-1923 Professor at Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts.

In 1924 he became president of the U.S. farm industry association, the American Farm Economic Association. During his long presidency in 1925, he wrote his two-volume magnum opus American Agriculture and the European market, which was published in 1926 in German translation under the title of American agriculture and the European industrial nations.

Nourse, in 1934 a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, took over in 1942 the office of President of the American Economic Association, an association of U.S. economists who increasingly became an international association of economists. As a result of the Employment Act 1946, the Council of Economic Advisers, an advisory body of the President of the United States, was created Nourse became its first president and remained in this position until 1950.

After retiring from this office he received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1950-1951. Nourse, who was also a member of the Social Science Research Council and Vice President of the Brookings Institution, and finally in 1957 a Fellow of the American Agricultural Economics Association.
