Edwin Sandys (bishop)

Edwin Sandys (* 1519 in St Bees, † 1588 in York ) was Archbishop of York.

Life

As a graduate of Cambridge, he held a number of church offices. Under the reign of Edward VI. he became Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge. Because of his support of Lady Jane Grey ( 1553), he was detained temporarily, but soon left England and did not return until after the accession of Elizabeth I. After that, he was successively Bishop of Worcester ( 1559 ), Bishop of London ( 1570) and Archbishop of York ( 1577). Although he was a Protestant, he was frequently with the non-conformists in dispute.
