Eel ladder

An eel ( brut ) chief, also known as Aalgang or Aaltreppe, is a fish pass, which is specifically geared to the needs of eels. Such a climbing aid enables the night upriver pulling in spring young eels ( elvers, Aalbrut ) a thriving against strong currents and thus the circumvention of waterfalls and weirs.

A Aalleiter is usually from a trough or tube in which through built-in cross bars, stones, twigs or plastic bristles, the flow is slowed down so far that the small eels can swim against it. At the lower end of the conductor is widened in a funnel shape.
