Eemil Nestor Setälä

Eemil Nestor Setälä ( Emil Nestor Setälä also, born February 27, 1864 in Kokemäki; † February 8, 1935 in Helsinki) was a Finnish politician. From September to November 1917 he was the president of the Finnish Senate.

Setälä was as a linguist from 1893 to 1929 professor of Finnish language and literature at the University of Helsinki. He had a significant influence on the research of the Finnish language. He was the founder of the research institute Suomen suku ("The Family of the Finnish language "). In 1901 he designed the draft version of the Uralic Phonetic Alphabet (UPA ).

As a politician, he was elected several times for the Young Finnish Party and later for the National Coalition Party in Parliament. For a brief period during the end of World War I, he served as President of the Senate as the de facto leader. Later he was Minister of Education (1925 ) and Foreign Minister ( 1925-1926 ). 1927-1930 he was Ambassador of Finland to Denmark and Hungary.
