History, name explanations

In this area, where the struggle between man and water has always played a major role, already at the beginning of our era, the first settlements (including Warffum and Usquert ) ( German: mounds ) created " wierden " on. These are raised by human hands altitudes where farms and later churches and small villages developed. In the 10th century it began to build along the ever northward retreating Wadden Sea coastal dikes. Thus arose Uithuizen ( = the lying to the outside houses) and later Uithuizermeeden ( = the meadows at Uithuizen; " Meeden, maggots, vending machines " are ostniederländische dialect words for " lawn mowing hay where you "; compare matt in: Zermatt ). In Usquert there was in the Middle Ages important fisheries; the name can be explained as a " Fischwarft ".

In the 18th century a ship stranded in the mud. The area was polders, and the old ship converted into a hostel. So the hamlet Oudeschip arose.

Throughout the community there are villa style farmhouses dating from the 19th century because the farmers who then cultivated all kinds of cereals, could demand high prices and were often very rich. The village was built around Roodeschool a 1830 -built, red school building.

Strange is the toponym Doodstil. The Dutch word " Doodstil " means " dead silent " extremely quiet. The hamlet is also very quiet. The name means but " til " (= small bridge ) of Doede. A man with this first name had a farm to the was the place long ago. The small bridge that can be opened by hand, still exists. This place-name was chosen in a poll by the Dutch and Dutch -speaking Belgian population, the "most beautiful place name" of the Dutch language area in 2005.
