Egbert Brieskorn

Egbert Brieskorn Valentin (* July 7, 1936 in Rostock, † July 11, 2013 in Bonn ) was a German mathematician.

Life and work

Brieskorn was born in 1936 the son of a mill construction engineer from East Prussia. He grew up in Freudenberg (winner country) and studied mathematics and physics in Munich and Bonn. In 1963 he received his doctorate in Bonn Friedrich Hirzebruch on singularities (For differential- and analytical classification of certain algebraic manifolds ), followed by the habilitation in 1968. From 1969 to 1973 he was professor at Göttingen and from 1973 to 1975 at the Sonderforschungsbereich Theoretische Mathematik in Bonn (since 1980 Max Planck Institute for Mathematics ). 1975 until his retirement in 2001 he was a professor in Bonn. These visits abroad were such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (where he was in 1965 Moore Instructor ) and at the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques ( IHES ) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich ), Leiden University, the University of Oxford, Warwick University, the University of Liverpool and the University of Nice.

Brieskorn dealt with the geometry of singularities in differential topology in holomorphic maps and in algebraic geometry, with contexts, for example to Dynkindiagrammen of Lie groups, certain finite groups, Theory of braids, exotic spheres hypergeometric (with different Differenzierbarkeitsstrukturen ) Monodromiematrizen differential equations.

Since the seventies, he was active in the peace movement, since the eighties in the environmental and conservation movement. Brieskorn worked on the editorial project " Felix Hausdorff - Collected Works " of the North Rhine- Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts with. In 1970 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Nice ( Singular elements of semi -simple algebraic groups).

His doctoral include Horst Knörrer, Erhard Scholz, Wolfgang Ebeling, Kyoji Saito and Gert- Martin Greuel.
