Egg, Austria

Egg is a municipality with 3439 inhabitants (December 31, 2013) in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg in the district of Bregenz. It is the most populous and with an area of ​​65.37 square kilometers, the largest municipality of the Bregenzerwald.

Geography

Egg is located in the westernmost province of Austria, Vorarlberg, in the district of Bregenz southeast of Lake Constance to 561 meters. 37.3 % of the area is forested, 31.5 % of the area Alps. The highest point is High Ifen with the worm hole, the largest cave in Vorarlberg.

History

1275 the village " Anderegge " was first mentioned. By the end of the "Forests Republic " was held here, the high court of the Inner Bregenzerwald. The Habsburgs ruled the place changing of Tyrol and Further Austria from ( Freiburg im Breisgau).

From 1805 to 1814, the town belonged to Bavaria, then back to Austria. For the Austrian state of Vorarlberg Egg heard since its founding in 1861.

Egg was also known by the fact that the former Gauleiter of Württemberg-Hohenzollern, Wilhelm Murr, along with his wife, carried by poison vials took his own life on May 14, 1945. Both were buried in the cemetery of Egg. The place was from 1945 to 1955 part of the French zone of occupation in Austria.

At a momentous fire disaster occurred on February 8, 2008. Alois Negrelli ( planned the Suez Canal ), constructed in 1834, built from wooden bridge between Egg and Lingenau.
