According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 194.1 km ², of which 174.4 km ² of land and 19.7 km ² ( 10.15% ) is water.

According to the census of 2000, there are 30,726 people, 11,199 households, and 8,108 families residing in the city. The population density is 176.1 inhabitants per km ². 79.42 % of the population are White, 10.37% African American, 0.21 % Native American, 5.05 % Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 2.82 % from other races, and 2.07% mixed race. 6.76% are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 11,199 households 37.5 % have children under 18 years. 55.3 % are married couples living together, 12.6% are single mothers, 27.6% are non-families, 22.0% consist of all households and 7.1% in people older than 65, the average household size is 2, 74, the average family size is 3.23.
