Eggenberg Castle, Vorchdorf

The Eggenberg Castle is located about 1.7 km from Vorchdorf in Upper Austria on the road to Gmunden. Today it is best known for its beer brewery.

History

The oldest building of the castle was probably built around 971 and it has several times changed hands families in a turbulent history. 1274 is the first recorded mention of the pledge on the occasion of the Maier Court's Eggeberg at the Passau cleric Heimricus de attachments. As of 1287, the family of Eggenberg with Tiemo the Eggenberger and Ottokar von Eggenberg, then the Lords of Walsee are the owners. The brewery has been proven since the 14th century. At that time, beer for the surrounding villages and property was made ​​. 1681 began the commercial brewery by Michael Weismann.

Eggenberg castle today

The defensive character of the castle, as it shows the engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer, has been lost today. The wide moat was gradually filled up. The two towers flanking the entrance are dismantled and only recognizable as corners of the house. A fire in 1877 substantial parts of the castle were destroyed, so that today only parts of the former outer bailey are obtained. The new mansion was built according to the plans of the Viennese architect Jung. The rule wing is equipped on the garden side with curved wrought iron window baskets. Also at the courtyard there is wrought iron fences, but in a simpler version. In the courtyard area you will find a long building with a roof tower and an attached cross, a reference to the castle chapel. The original chapel in 1782 it was demolished and rebuilt in 1889 by the founders Carl and Caroline Forstinger. The altarpiece represents the Virgin Coronation of the painter Franz Lachner angel from Gmunden dar.

The building of the Schloss Eggenberg brewery stands diagonally opposite the old castle. In the 1970s a new brewhouse was opened. Today, the brewery can occupy mainly with selected beers market niches. Among other things, the supposedly strongest lager in the world is brewed: the Santa Claus beer.
