Eggern is a market town with 725 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Gmünd in Lower Austria.

Geography

Eggern located in the northern Waldviertel in Lower Austria. The area of ​​the municipality covers 20.2 square kilometers. 36.77 percent of the area is forested.

History

Eggern was first documented in 1230 and originally belonged to the county Raab - Litschau. Until 1635 Eggern was a private Gütlein in an imperial possession. The cultural center of the village is the church dedicated to St. Giles in the year 1792. In the Austrian state of Lower Austria lying core of the city told the eventful history of Austria.

Population Development

According to the results of the 2001 census, there were 777 inhabitants. In 1991, the market town of 804 inhabitants in 1981 and 916 in 1971, 1,009 inhabitants.
