Egide Walschaerts

Egide Walschaerts ( born January 21, 1820 Mechelen, † 1901) was a Belgian mechanical engineer.

He studied at Liège and 1842 came to the workshops of the Belgian State Railways, which later became SNCB.

He invented in 1844 in the non - German-speaking countries named after him Walschaerts control, which was to become the most common control with steam locomotives worldwide. This control enables to adjust the degree of filling of the cylinder without affecting the steam Voreinströmung or advance flow further it enables to change by reversing the direction of rotation of the steam engine. In German-speaking countries, this control is called Heusinger control (after Edmund Heusinger von Waldegg ), who invented it about five years later, regardless of Walschaerts.

He has also been invented yet further improvements in steam engines and was awarded at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1878 and the World Expo 1885 in Liege with a gold medal.
