Egil Hovland

Egil Hovland ( born October 18, 1924 in Råde, Østfold, † February 5, 2013 in Fredrikstad, Østfold ) was a Norwegian composer.

Life

Egil Hovland studied at the Conservatory of Oslo in Arild Sandvold and Bjarne Brustad, in Copenhagen in Vagn Holmboe, at Tanglewood with Aaron Copland and in Florence with Luigi Dallapiccola. From 1949 he was organist and choirmaster in Fredrikstad. He composed two symphonies, a concertino for three trumpets and strings, a music for ten instruments, Variations for two pianos, tape music and 1963 Lamenti for Orchestra. With the Sinfonia sacra, the Norwegian Te Deum, a Gloria, a Magnificat and numerous organ pieces, he became one of the most important church musician in Norway.

He wrote in various styles, such as the Norwegian- romantic, the Gregorian, the neo -classical, the dodecaphonic and the aleatoric style and serial music. In particular, but he distinguished himself as a creator of sacred music. Due to its merits as a composer and organist, he was in 1983 the award as a knight and given as Commander in the Royal Order of St. Olav in 2005. He was considered one of the most prolific contemporary Norwegian composers.
