Eglinton Island

Eglinton Iceland is an island of the Queen Elizabeth Islands. It is located in the Northwest Territories of Canada.

The island is about 73 km long, 9-27 km wide, 1541 km ² and up to 210 m high. Eglinton Iceland is separated from Melville Island to the east by the Kellett Strait, from Prince Patrick Island in the west by the Crozier Channel and the Bank Island on the south by the McClure Strait.

The island was discovered in 1853 by George Frederick Mecham ( 1828-1858 ), who belonged to the British expedition of Henry Kellett, who was on the search for the missing John Franklin. In the same year Francis Leopold McClintock traveled by dogsled the west coast of the island. It is named after Archibald Montgomerie, 13th Earl of Eglinton, named ( 1812-1861 ).
