Egocentrism

Egocentrism ( to Greek / Latin: ego = I and centrum center ) denotes the self can be seen at the center and, thus usually accompanied an exaggerated self-centeredness (not to be confused with selfishness ) and the property of other people property of the human character, and resistant to measure things in themselves and their own perspective.

With egocentrism mainly describes a " egocentricity of perception" that empathize the inability to get into the role of another or to adopt the perspective of others as well as a conceiving own perspective among many. This capability is referred to as Theory of Mind. It is a particular property of the child, according to Jean Piaget " a lack of a distinction between the self and the outer reality." This primacy " eventually lead to the primacy of one's own point of view".

In psychopathology are egocentric reactions of a self in the form that patients put themselves at the center and are self-centered, ie all refer to their person. It is regarded as another form of personality change in addition to the regression. A pathological egocentricity is diagnosed mainly in the antisocial personality disorders such as, narcissistic, or histrionic personality disorder.
