Ehmja ( German Echmes ) is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Martna ( Martna vald ) in Lääne in Estonia.

Population and location

The place has twenty inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). It is 17 kilometers south-east of the district capital of Haapsalu. Through the village the river Rannamõisa ( Rannamõisa Jõgi ), which empties into the Bay of Matsalu flows.

History

Probably already originated in the Middle Ages, a courtyard with an old castle hill, the Kuradimägi.

The first mention of the estate dates back to 1529th At that time the canon Johann Varnsbeke was the owner of the stipend to Heymi.

Around 1800, the two-story mansion was built. In the massive building, a native of Westphalia Heinrich Caspar manifold founded (1796-1873) in the early 19th century, the Krummersche Institute, a reform school for boys. Today only ruins are still preserved.

Last private owner of the farm was Alexander Baron Hoyningen -Huene from confiscation in the course of the Estonian land reform of 1919.

1836 a village school was founded at the location. From 1889 to 1892 there taught the later Estonian writer and journalist Jacob Mändmets ( 1871-1930 ).
