Geography

Oak Mountain is located east of Lake Constance, on the slopes of the Massif pledges in Vorarlberg in the district of Bregenz. 60.7 % of the area is forested.

The high mountain is 1,069 meters, the highest elevation in the municipality. It is thus still five feet higher than nearby pledges, which is as local mountain of Bregenz from tourist importance.

By Wirtatobel, a forest and pasture area on the eastern slope of the pledges that runs a well-known forest road, the so-called Wirtatobelstraße. It connects the northern end of the Fluherstraße ( Bregenz / rock face ) with the Tröger Stueble at Oak Mountain.

Eichenberg is the geographically largest community in the region Leiblachtal and includes numerous districts with (for example, young wood, Lutzenreute, Lower Wood, key fief ). There are also scattered farmsteads. However, there are no further Katastralgemeinden in Eichenberg.

Neighboring communities

The community of Oak Mountain has a common municipal boundary with four other municipalities in Vorarlberg, all of which are just as Eichenberg in the political district Bregenz. Clockwise are, starting in the north, the municipalities Möggers, Langen, near Bregenz, Lochau and the market town Hörbranz. Only just bordering Oak Mountain in the extreme south of the township not to the city of Bregenz, which is thus no direct neighboring community. A geographically very small bulge of Lochauer municipal area prevented a clash of Eichenberger and the Bregenz town limits.

History

The place was 1320 and the name " Aichberg " first mentioned. The place name is evidently derived from the oak forests in which emerged during the Middle Ages by clearing the first individual farms. Until 1523, the area belonged to residents of the Württemberg Tettnang Montfortern who then sold their property to the Habsburgs. North and south of the town since the 15th century led by the Upper and Lower Salt Road, however, the inhabitants lived a long time very secluded. Administratively part Eichenberg first to northern Möggers and was the parish church Bregenz assigned. After 1839, the hl. Bernard parish church was completed after three years of construction, Eichenberg was raised on 5 June 1873, independent parish.

After the defeat of Austria against Napoleon Eichenberg came from 1805 to 1814 together with Vorarlberg to Bavaria. By a law of the State Government of Vorarlberg on December 23, 1921 Eichenberg received with effect from April 5, 1922 the status of an independent municipality. The independence was temporarily during the time of the Anschluss of Austria to Nazi Germany from 1938 to 1946 by the annexation to Bregenz lost. From 1945 to 1955 Eichenberg was in the French zone of occupation.

As one of the oldest cheese manufacturer in Vorarlberg in 1902 the dairy Lutzenreute founded, which still (2009) exists as a cooperative. 1921 the first power plant to produce electricity was put into operation in the district Lutzenreute that supplied the farms in fief, Unterfluh and key fief. The village center was a year later connected to the network of Vorarlberg power plants. The first phone was installed in 1925 at the Gasthof Krone. 1931 Eichenberger Volunteer Fire Department was founded with 38 members. In 1959 started the construction of a new school house, 1990, the cross-town was attractive remodeled, and in 1997 a new multi-purpose building the community was put into operation.

For the first community leaders ( the official title of mayor was only introduced in 1935 ) in 1922 was appointed Adolf Dürr, who led his official duties of his farm in the village three kilometers from the remote district of fief. While he was seven years in office, Josef Degasper could at age 18 refer to the hitherto longest tenure (1965 - 1983). Mayor Hermann Gmeiner, who was elected to office in 1985, but surpassed him with a 25- year term. The municipal council consists of nine members. The municipality revenue from taxes and other charges in 2001 were at € 518,390, the municipal expenditure at € 526,355. The debt was 2001 668.216 €.

Economy

Until the 20th century the inhabitants of Eichenberg lived mainly from agriculture. But already in 1840 promoted several inns to overnight guests. In " Vorarlberg restaurant directory" of 1929 four inns are listed with rooms in Eichenberg. After the Second World War, tourism grew rapidly in importance. Since the 1990s, recorded four hotels, several guest houses and apartments at an annual rate of 17,000 nights. In addition to the hospitality industry wood processing plants, two dairies, a butcher and a car repair shop work.

Transport and Infrastructure

Until the 19th century, the nearest large town Lochau Lake Constance region was only accessible through a narrow pass. It was not until 1894 and 1895, started the construction of two paved roads to Hörbranz and Lochau that were yet are so steep that they could barely cope with heavily loaded wagons.

For the first time in 1934 with the construction of a paved road between the village center and the district Lutzenreute in which a height difference of 74 meters had to be overcome to four kilometers. Due to an interruption of the construction works during the Second World War, the road was not completed until 1955. Coat of arms

The municipal coat of arms was Eichenberg conferred by a certificate of the Provincial Government of Vorarlberg on 23 September 1969. It is described in the deed as follows: "In Black over Silver Three mountain a silver oak branch with four leaves and three golden acorns. " It was designed by the artist and Schrunser heraldist Konrad Honold, who thus a " canting " coat of arms created.

Oak Mountain is known for the cheese trail across the back of pledges ( mountain of Bregenz). The Senner in a Lutzenreute and young wood offer mountain cheese. The cheese maker in Lutzenreute has already won several awards in cheese Olympics with gold medals.
