Eichsfeld (district)

The district Eichsfeld [ aɪksfɛlt ] is a county in the extreme northwest of Thuringia. Most of the villages of the district belong to the eponymous historic landscape calibration field. Neighboring districts are the districts of Lower Saxony Göttingen and Osterode am Harz, in the eastern district of Nordhausen, in the southeastern Kyffhauserkreis, south of the Unstrut Hainich and west of the Hessian Werra- Meißner-Kreis in the north.

Geography

The county calibration field is in the northwest of the state of Thuringia, embedded between the resin in the north, the Werra and the Osthessischen mountains to the southwest and the Thuringian basin in the southeast.

In the south of the county, the landscape of about 450 m high limestone plates of the Upper Eichsfeld, the Düns and Gobert is marked ( with the 543.4 m high Goburg ). To the north, close to the hills of the central Eichsfeld. Again, mountain ranges rise like the Ohmgebirge with the 533.4 -meter-high mountain birch.

History

Until 1803, the calibration field belonged to Electoral Mainz, therefore it is characterized primarily Catholic today. Then it belonged first to Prussia, in 1815 there were but at the still existing division of the Eichsfeld between Hanover and Prussia. The Prussian part came in 1945 in Thuringia and was with this later part of the German Democratic Republic.

The present district was created on 1 July 1994 by merging the counties Holy City and Worbis.

Language

Due to the division of Germany and the whereabouts of belonging to a special Thuringia Eichsfelder dialect is spoken in Obereichsfeld. You can hear here the Thuringian out, especially with hard consonants. The dialect, however, is clearly not so " washed out" and Thuringian breathed, as in the adjacent Thuringian counties. District
