Eiko Ishioka

Eiko Ishioka (Jap.石 冈 瑛 子, Eiko Ishioka, born July 12, 1938 in the prefecture of Tokyo, † January 21, 2012 same place ) was a Japanese designer and costume designer.

Life and work

The daughter of a graphic designer graduated in 1961 her art studies at the Tōkyō Daigaku Geijutsu and then worked in the advertising department of the cosmetics company Shiseido. Since the early 1970s it was self- made ​​and first attracted attention by advertising for the Japanese department store Parco.

Together with cinematographer John Bailey and the composer Philip Glass in 1985 she received a special award at the International Film Festival of Cannes for the furnishing of the film Mishima - A Life in Four Chapters. 1986, designed by her cover of the album Tutu by Miles Davis was awarded a Grammy. An Oscar for costume design, she received in 1992 for the film Bram Stoker's Dracula by Francis Ford Coppola. In the 2000s, a multi-year collaboration followed as a costume designer with the film director Tarsem Singh. On Broadway Ishioka designed the sets and costumes for the play M. Butterfly by David Henry Hwang and finally the costumes for the musical Spider -Man: Turn Off the Dark.

At the Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City in 2002, members wore Switzerland, Canada, Japan and Spain, designed by her clothing of teams. Likewise, Ishioka was responsible for the costumes of the opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.

Ishioka has directed Bjork's music video Cocoon (2002) and designed the costumes for Grace Jones Hurricane Tour ( 2009).

In January 2013, it was posthumously for the film Mirror Mirror - nominated The Untold Adventures of Snow White for an Oscar.
