The action takes place in Venice in the mid- 18th century and is a panel and comedy of errors with love confusion between two stands.

Formation

Friedrich Zell and Richard Genée had two textbooks for a new operetta to choose from: A Night in Venice and The Beggar Student. Johann Strauss chose the first book; with the other Karl Millöckers began career. Like many other Viennese operettas is the libretto editing a French opéra comique (hence the term " comic operetta" ): Le Château trompette (1860 ) by François Auguste Gevaert. A plagiarism accusation from Paris showed, however, that such secondary use were not as unproblematic as even a generation ago.

Because Strauss's wife had an affair with Franz Steiner, the director of the Theater an der Wien begun, Strauss did not want to be premiered there and accepted the offer of the Berlin operetta. The premiere was to failure. Nevertheless, the work was performed again and again, but mostly in arrangements. The most well-known in Western Europe this processing comes from Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1923). In eastern Europe the processing of Walter Felsenstein (1952 ) was played much more frequently. Which remained, unlike the processing of Korngold, clearly the original, avoiding the incorporated in Korngold numbers from other operettas by Strauss.

The most famous musical numbers are the Lagoon Waltz and the gondola song. The Vienna - Venice fashion later had its peak in the theme park Venice in Vienna.

In the context of a media debate about the alleged decline of the Viennese operetta Erich Wolfgang Korngold worked as a partisan of the Conservatives, the piece in 1923 for the Theater an der Wien. The tenor Richard Tauber received in a starring role. This version has been played often around at the Vienna Volksoper until the recent time and also on recordings more present than the original.
