Ekklesiasterion

A Ekklesiasterion was in the city states of ancient Greece, the meeting room of the Ekklesia, the People's Assembly of the city, which included all citizens with full civil rights. A smaller group, the Council ( Bule ) of the city, on the other hand was held in the much smaller Buleuterion.

The Ekklesiasterion was similar to the Theatre of ancient Greece from rising rows of seats, which were arranged in a semicircle around a rostrum usually. In Ekklesiasterion of Akragas in Sicily, it was, for example, 20 rows of seats. The oldest known Ekklesiasterion is that of Metapontum, which dates back to the late 7th century BC.
