El Altar

El Altar ( Kichwa: Kapak Urku, Quechua Qhapaq Urquhart " mighty mountain ", " royal mountain ") is a 5319 -meter-high inactive stratovolcano in the Andes in the west of the Sangay National Park in Ecuador ( Chimborazo province ), about 170 km south of the capital Quito. It arose in the Pliocene or Pleistocene. Its caldera is located in the west.

Nine of its peaks are over 5000 meters high. At an altitude of 4200 meters there is a crater lake named Laguna Collanes or Laguna Amarilla. The last eruption is unknown, but probably took place before the year 1460.
