El Biar

El Biar ( from the Arabic " الأبيار " Meaning: The sources ) is a suburb of Algiers, the capital of Algeria. It is located in the administrative unit Bouzareah in the province of Algiers. According to the 2005 census it has a population of 93 012.

History

El Biar was an upscale suburb of Algiers during the Algerian war. There was the villa of the tour Elles, a notorious torture center of the French army. The French mathematician Maurice Audin was tortured and murdered here. The French Henri Alleg survived torture and imprisonment. He described the atrocities in his book La Question.
