El Campo is a city in Wharton County in the U.S. state of Texas.

Geography

The city is located almost centrally located in the County, in southeast Texas, is in the southwest about 80 km from the Gulf of Mexico.

History

1882 railway workers' camp called Prairie Switch on the site of the present city built and served in the following years as a trading center and supply depot for the New York, Texas and Mexican Railway. Mexican cowboys called the Camp El Campo and was opened in 1890 as the first post office, they took the name.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 10,945 people in 3,931 households and 2,810 families. The population density was 565.7 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 69.07 % White, 11.88 % African American, 0.33 % Native American, 0.28 % Asian, 0.01 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 16.66% from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.77% were of mixed descent, and 38.68 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 3,931 households, 37.3 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.1 % were married couples living together. 13.5 % were single mothers and 28.5 % were non-families. 25.8 % of all households were single-person households, and 14.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.31 persons to.

30.1% of the population were under 18 years old, 9.5 % from 18 to 24, 26.2% 25-44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.8 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 92.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 86.8 males.

The median income for a household was $ 30,694, and the median income for a family $ 35,155. Males had a median income of $ 27,416 versus $ 18,872 for females.
