El Cazador (ship)

El Cazador ( " The Hunter") was the name of a Spanish war ship ( brig ), which sailed on 11 January 1784 by Vera Cruz ( Mexico) with 19 tons of Spanish real silver coins to New Orleans, the former capital of the Spanish colony of Louisiana.

The money should serve the economic situation in the colony to stabilize. The ship sank off the coast of Louisiana, however, for unknown reasons. The economic situation deteriorated so that Spain was forced to sell the colony in 1800 to France.

1993 Fischer found the wreck.

A design detail of this silver coin was a source of design of the dollar sign ($).
