El Colegio de México (CM or " COLMEX "; German: The College of Mexico ) is an independent since 1998, public teaching institution for humanities and social sciences with university character in the district of Tlalpan, Mexico City.

History

The COLMEX was established in 1940 by the Mexican government under President Lázaro Cárdenas del Río as a State institution consequence of the "Casa de España " (Eng.: Spain - house ) was founded. Co-founders were the Banco de México, the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and the Fondo de Cultura Económica (German: Fond of low culture). The "Casa de España " was founded in 1938 to promote intellectual Spaniards can, who had emigrated to escape from the Spanish Civil War to Mexico.

The first director of the COLMEX was until 1958, the Mexican poet and essayist Alfonso Reyes, who had previously led even the "Casa de España ". During this time, the research institutes created for History (1941 ), Social Sciences ( 1943) and Language and Literature (1947). 1958 Daniel joined Cosío Villegas succession Reyes as Provost and gave this office but a year later on. In 1960, the COLMEX to the Research Institute for International Studies and 1964 under Silvio Zavala, who headed the COLMEX 1963-1966 to expand the Institute for the Study of Economic and population sciences.

1976 moved into the COLMEX the built according to designs by Teodoro González de León and Abraham Zabludovsky present building complex in the south of Mexico City. Today it has since 1998 autonomous COLMEX seven research institutes and one of the most important libraries in Latin America.
