El Mercurio

El Mercurio is a Chilean newspaper with national circulation and a member of the Grupo de Diarios América.

History

El Mercurio was founded in 1827 by Pedro Félix Vicuña in Valparaíso; However, their version of the capital Santiago de Chile was first published on 1 June 1900. Mercurio de Valparaíso Version El is the oldest still published newspaper in the world in Spanish. The sheet with conservative basic orientation is considered the leading daily newspaper ( "paper -of- record" ) of the South American country. In 1880 she was purchased by Agustín Edwards Ross and has since been linked to the Edwards family.

The newspaper was a pioneer in the introduction of several technical innovations, both in terms of writing, setting and printing. Currently, she has one of the most modern printing companies in South America, which was inaugurated in the mid-1980s.

Orientation

The line of the editorial was - at least under the direction of Agustín Edwards Eastman - very conservative, while the big rival newspaper La Tercera rather leftist writes.

This situation was particularly evident in the bitter opposition of the Mercurio against the government of Salvador Allende. According to the sheet afterward showed a markedly positive attitude towards the military regime of Augusto Pinochet. It was later learned that El Mercurio had received substantial financial support from the CIA. The U.S. intelligence praised the newspaper in a memorandum and certified her to have an important role in the preparation of Pinochet's coup played (see also CIA activities in Chile).

After Transición the sheet pursued a moderate critical attitude towards the various government from the center-left Concertación de Partidos Alliance por la Democracia.
