El Poblenou

Poblenou, also El Poblenou, ( Catalan for New Village ) is a neighborhood of the city of Barcelona. It is part of the municipality of Sant Martí in the north- east of the city and is adjacent to the Mediterranean Sea.

Expansion of the neighborhood

History

The emergence of the district in today's expansion is due to the increasing industrialization of Barcelona in the 18th century. Originally Poblenou was an independent suburb of the city of Barcelona and not related to this. The advantageous for the industrial seaside location, the district grew quickly and reached the end of the 19th century, the highest density of industry in all of Spain. Therefore, he was popularly known as El Manchester Català (, The Catalan Manchester ') called.

Today

Since the 1960s, the industry is increasingly migrated to the affluent suburbs of Barcelona. The former industrial areas with factories and warehouses are increasingly converted into residential areas with lofts, art galleries, schools, fitness clubs, etc..

With the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992, large parts of the former industry in the Olympic Village, the Olympic Village Vila were further converted. These sports park and about 2,000 apartments are built as accommodation for the participants team. These are now mostly as holiday use.

Culture and sights

The former industrial buildings offer several galleries and studios of mostly young local artists.

Like almost all areas of Barcelona Poblenou has its own Rambla and a market hall. The Rambla Poblenou is largely Traffic Calmed area and stretches from the Gran Via to directly to the Mediterranean. It attracts with its diverse shops and restaurants, especially at weekends pay rich visitors.

Structures

In the transformation of the industrial zones, the unit brick chimneys of the factories were deliberately produced. They are now a protected monument.

There are also various new buildings worth seeing, such as the Hotel ME or the Torre Agbar.

Parks

Traffic

Poblenou is connected to both the Metro subway system as well as to the tram system in the city. The station Poblenou Metro Line 4 is the most centrally located in the district.
