El Tamarindo Airport

The Aeropuerto de El Tamarindo is an airfield in the department of La Unión on the Gulf of Fonseca in El Salvador.

Location

The local airport with the ICAO code MSET is located on the peninsula of El Jaguey around 190 kilometers east of the capital San Salvador. It was originally constructed as a military airfield. The paved runway, Runway 15/33 has a length of 1430 meters. The airport is managed by the Commision Ejecutiva Portuaria Autónoma and is approved for light aircraft and helicopters.

Expanding regional airport

The mayors of the municipalities of El Carmen, Conchagua, Santa Rosa de Lima, Intipuca, Pasaquina, San José de la Fuente, La Unión, Bolívar, Yayantique and Chirilagua that are located around the under construction mega Puerto La Unión Centroamericana, intend to accordance with the future port activities and the expected tourism of the nearby bays expand the airfield. The Defence Minister David Munguia Payes and the Deputy Minister of Tourism Mauritius Oñate have initiated a feasibility study for a regional airport with the mayors. The Japanese ambassador to El Salvador shisei Kaku has the willingness to support, as Japan already involved in the construction of modern pier installations from the new port.
