Elaeagnus

Narrow Elaeagnus ( Elaeagnus angustifolia)

The oil willow ( Elaeagnus ) are a genus of about 45-90 species within the family of oil willow family ( Elaeagnaceae ).

Naming

Dissemination

They have their dissemination of the hot temperate latitudes to the subtropics of the Northern Hemisphere, with a kind in Australia. One focus of biodiversity is Asia. In China, about 67 species have been recorded, of which 55 are just there.

Description

Elaeagnus species are generally hardy and robust, evergreen or deciduous shrubs or small trees that grow usually up straight or sometimes climbing. Some species have thorns. Leaves, the bark of young branches and flower buds have silvery to brown scales. The change-constant leaves are divided into petiole and leaf blade. The simple leaf blade usually has a smooth edge.

The flowers are borne in the leaf axils singly or in groups. The hermaphrodite flowers are usually cruciform. The four white or yellow inner sepals are fused Roehrig. The only four stamens are fused with the calyx tube. The style is straight. Are formed spherical to elongated drupes; rare ( Elaeagnus mollis ) they are winged. The most achtrippige seeds has a large embryo.

System

The genus name Elaeagnus was listed by Carl Linnaeus in his 1753 Species Plantarum published work, where the two species Elaeagnus angustifolia Elaeagnus latifolia and were called. A synonym is oleasters Heister ex Fabricius. In the genus Elaeagnus today about 45 to 90 species can be distinguished. Many of the species are morphologically almost indistinguishable, so some species are likely to be grouped together. Here is a list of species and interspecific hybrids mentioned in GRIN:
