Elana Meyer

Elana Meyer ( born October 10, 1966 in Albertinia, South Africa ) is a former South African long-distance runner and Olympic medalist.

Elana Meyer ran until the end of the 1990s, mainly over distances 1500-10000 meters and then specialized in the half marathon and marathon. In its native South Africa, she won over 20 titles in track and field. Since 1991 she holds the world record in the 15 - km road race ( 46:57 ) and improved from 1991 to 1999 four times the world record in the half marathon at the time of 1:06:44. In 1994, she was third in 1995 and second in the Boston Marathon. In 1998, she won the third place at the Chicago Marathon.

At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, she won the silver medal in the 10,000 meter run behind the Ethiopian Derartu Tulu ( gold ) and before the US-American Lynn Jennings ( bronze).

In 2005, she announced that she would be retiring from competitive sports.
