Elazar ben Moshe Azikri

Eleazar b. R. Moshe Azikri (* 1533 in Safed, Safed † 1600 ) was a Jewish scholar, kabbalist and poet of the 16th century.

He came from a Sephardic family that had settled after the expulsion from Spain in Palestine.

Rabbi Eleazar studied the Torah with Josef Sagis and Jacob Berab and is considered one of the greatest rabbis and scholars of his time. He wrote among other things, comments on individual tracts of the Palestinian Talmud.

1588 he founded the " Sukat Shalom " movement, which sought to promote devotion to the religion of the Jews.

Rabbi Eleazar died 1600 and was buried in Safed.
