Elche
Elche [ eltʃe ] in Valencian Elx [ ɛltʃ ] ( both forms are officially ) is a Spanish city in the Autonomous Community of Valencia in the province of Alicante about 20 km south-west of Alicante and the Costa Blanca on the river Vinalopó.
History
The city of Elche can be restored to the Iberians traced back to about 600 BC the village Helice lived about two miles from the present town. After the conquest by the Roman Empire, the city was preserved and developed continuing. The Moors conquered Spain in the 8th century and gave the city its present name.
South of the present-day city was found on August 4, 1897, a bust of the Iberians time. She is known as the Dama de Elche and is exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid.
Culture and sights
Since May 2006 the Historical and Archaeological Museum ( MAHE ), which brings the visitor closer to the long history of moose.
The city is known for its palm-filled gardens, the largest, El Palmeral, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 and for the counting of the masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity mystery plays of Elche.
Sports
Elche is the home of the football club FC Elche, in the 2012/13 season, the direct ascent and thus after 24 years to return to the Primera División succeeded. The Elche FC plays its home games at the Martinez Valero - Stadium, which was also the venue for the World Cup 1982.
