Eldey

Eldey (German: "Fire Island" ) is a rocky island off the southwest coast of Iceland.
Eldey, a Palagonitfelsen, was probably built by the eruption of 1210-11 on the Reykjanesrücken, a part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
The island is located 8 nautical miles ( 15 km ) off the coast of Reykjanestá. It is flat on top, at the highest point 77 m high and covers less than two hectares. It is considered a paradise for birds and has been protected since 1940. One can only enter with special permission.
Eldey is also Mehlsack island called because of the white color of the plateau by bird droppings. At the foot of the cliff the last breeding pair of flightless Great Auk was killed in 1844. On the ledge today mainly gannets nest. This is even one of the largest gannet colonies in the world. For their observation, a video camera on the island was installed in January 2008. Internet access to allow for the observation of birds without their fault.
