With their older (full) siblings Charles of Viana and Blanche of Aragon ( " Blanka II " ) Eleanor grew up in the magnificent Castle of Olite.

On July 30, 1436, the only 11 -year-old Eleanor Gaston IV, Count of Foix married out of the house Grailly. With this marriage Johann II sought influence in the north bordering the Pyrenees area to win.

After the death of Queen Blanka ( 1441 ) Navarre did not fall as planned to his son Charles of Viana; Instead, led by Johann II usurpation 1441-1479 continue the title of King of Navarre. 1441/42 drew Eleonore South of France, from now on in order to live on the territory of her husband and to perform with him the marriage. Nevertheless, John II could not win a final victory and offered his daughter Eleanor and her husband in 1455, instead of them Charles to the throne of Navarre transmitted, when the Count of Foix would support in return Johann II military. In fact, Gaston IV then struck Charles of Viana crucial. During the losers fled to the court of his uncle Alfonso V to Naples, Johann II convened the Cortes of Agramonteses in Estella, a disinherited Charles and his sister, Blanka and appointed Eleanor and Gaston IV to the heir to the throne of Navarre.

Blanka was launched in April 1462 over the Pyrenees to Saint -Jean -Pied -de-Port and eventually interned in the castle of Orthez in Béarn. She was allegedly tortured and abused in captivity and died on 2 December in 1464. Many historians suspect that they had been poisoned by order of Eleanor.

Eleanor had Navarra ruled as " governor " of her father since 1455, and it should be up to his death in 1479 (apart from a short break 1469/70 ) remain in this position until 1469 with the title " Lieutenant-General of Navarre " ( "Lieutenant générale de Navarre " ), since 1471 as the" Governor of Navarre " ( " governess de Navarre "). But was always under the suzerainty of her father and therefore could not exert completely independent governance. In 1468 she tried in vain with her husband to usurp the throne of Navarre by her father. In 1476 she met her father and her half-brother Ferdinand II, the Catholic in Viana and obtained their consent to be able to name her grandson Francis Phoebus to their heir.
