Electrical conduit

A cable channel is a system for laying electric cables. It serves to protect and mechanical relief of the cable. A cable tray is an open design of a cable channel.

Materials

  • Cable channels mostly consist of plastics in Germany.
  • In North America, steel is a more standard material. Plastic also is used, depending on the type and size of the building and the local building codes.

Assembly

In Germany the plastic cable duct is first screwed or glued to the wall. In North America, the channels are routed and left behind as other pipes too, or they will be installed prior to pouring of the concrete, thus becoming part of walls and ceilings. In lightweight construction they run inside the stands or work above suspended ceilings. Thereafter, the cables are laid in the cable duct. For this purpose normally build electrician a rope to pull the cables through so better. Then, the channel is closed. Cable channels are used to avoid costly in-wall installations or cable damage.

Fire protection

If necessary, cable channels can be dressed for fire protection, to ensure the functioning of the cables under fire conditions.

Precursor

The cable channel replaced in certain areas of the Bergmann pipe previously used.
