Electro-optic effect
The electro-optic effect describes the dependence of the refractive index of a medium of an external electric field.
The dependence of the index of refraction of the electric field strength can be represented by a Taylor series:
Here, the refractive index in the absence of a field.
- If, it is called linear electro-optic effect or the Pockels effect. is then relative to negligible except for extremely high electric fields.
- If and, one speaks of the quadratic electro -optic effect or Kerr effect.
