Eleusa icon

Eleusa or Eleousa (Greek Ἐλεούσα, eleusa that fellow sufferers, Erbarmerin ) is the iconographic type of Orthodox icons for a representation of the Virgin Mary with the Christ child. The Eleusa is characterized that Mary is the child turns affectionate, often touched with the left hand and the faces are nestled together. This is the intimate relationship between the two are clearly visible, with the painful expression on face of Mary indicates that she can foresee the Passion in the future are already. The Eleusa symbolizes the sacrifice of Jesus as the supreme sign of God's love for humanity.

Known examples of the Eleusa are the Fedorowskaja, Our Lady of Vladimir, the Ukrainian Lady of Pochaiv and the Byzantine Notre- Dame de Grâce.
