Eli P. Ashmun

Eli Porter Ashmun (* June 24, 1770 in Albany, New York, † May 10 1819 in Northampton, Massachusetts ) was an American politician ( Federalist Party), who represented the state of Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate.

Eli Ashmun was born in a small nearby village on the Hudson River north of Albany. He attended local schools and later the Middlebury College, where he graduated in 1807. At that time he had already been politically active: From 1803 to 1804 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Massachusetts. After completing his degree in law Ashmun was admitted to the bar association of the state and began to practice as a lawyer in Blandford. During this time, his son George was born, who later also became a politician and from 1845 was in the House of Representatives of the United States for Massachusetts to 1851. Ashmuns wife Lucy died already in 1812 at the age of 37 years.

1807 Ashmun moved to Northampton, where he further pursued his legal activities. From 1808 to 1810, and in 1813 he was a member of the Senate of Massachusetts; In 1816 he was part of the advisory board of the Governor ( Governor's Council). Following the resignation of U.S. Senator Christopher Gore Eli Ashmun was elected as his successor. He took his seat in Congress on June 12, 1816 until his own resignation on May 10, 1818 true. The following year he died in Northampton.
