Elias II, Count of Maine

Elias II of Maine (French: Hélie or Élie; *, † January 15, 1151 ) was a Count of Maine from the house Château -Landon. He was a younger son of Count Fulk V of Anjou and his first wife Eremburge de La Flèche († 1126 ), heiress of the county of Maine.

By the will of his father he was to succeed Elijah in the county of Maine, but was prevented by his older brother Geoffrey V of Anjou to the inheritance. Therefore Elias sought proximity to Norman barons to win them as allies. He married Philippa, daughter of Count Rotrou III. of Perche, who was a granddaughter of Henry I Beauclerc Norman ruler over her mother. Although Gottfried himself was a son of Henry Beauclerc, Elias was the rejection of Godfrey by the Norman barons, who rejected an inheritance of the Norman kingdom of Anjou, to be sure.

Indeed, Gottfried initially could not prevail in Normandy after the death of Henry Beauclerc 1131, since the Normans, among them Elias father, Stephen of Blois supported. But in 1141 joined the Earl of Perche and with him almost all the nobles of Normandy on the side of Godfrey, who took Rouen 1144. Thus deprived of his allies dared Elias 1145 a rebellion against his brother, but was defeated and imprisoned by it. It was not until 1151 Elias was re- released and well recognized by Gottfried in Maine, but died soon after at a fever disease.

From his marriage Elias had a daughter, Beatrix, who married Count John I of Alençon. Any inheritance of Beatrix on Maine were of their cousin Henry II Plantagenet ( son of Godfrey ) ignored.
