Life

After graduating from Yale University in 1813, Kane studied law and was admitted to Nashville ( Tennessee) as a lawyer. In 1814 he moved to Kaskaskia (Illinois ), where he has been appointed shortly afterwards a judge of the Illinois Territory. Kane suffered his only defeat in 1820 when he ran unsuccessfully for the Democrats for a seat in the House of Representatives of the United States. For this he was appointed in selban year for the first Secretary of State of Illinois and served from 1820 to 1824. Afterwards Kane was elected to the House of Representatives from Illinois, remained in this position, however, only a few months. The reason was his appointment as U.S. Senator for his state of Illinois. Kane was re-elected in 1831 and served from March 4, 1825 until his death at the age of only 41 years.

His daughter Elizabeth Kane was married to William Henry Bissell, who was first a congressman and 1857-1860 Governor of Illinois.
