Elias Loomis

Elias Loomis ( born August 7, 1811 in Willington, Connecticut, † August 15 1889 in New Haven ( Connecticut ) ) was an American mathematician, meteorologist and astronomer.

In 1826 he enrolled as a student at Yale University and reached there in 1830 his degree. After intermediate stations at Mount Hope Academy and the Andover Theological Seminary, he began in 1833 at Yale as a tutor. In 1835 he was appointed professor at Western Reserve College in Hudson ( Ohio). From there he joined in 1844 as professor of mathematics at New York University. In 1860 he returned to Yale.

Loomis dealt astronomy, mathematics, physics and meteorology. He used as instruments to the latest technologies of the time. So he used to study the differences of longitude of New York and other cities, the electric telegraph. In 1842 he recorded the first time a weather map of a storm that hit in 1836 ravaged the eastern United States. He has published numerous books that have been sold in large editions and translated into many other languages. At his death in 1889 he left with $ 300,000, the highest legacy that Yale University had until then ever received.
