Elias Zoghby

Elias Zoghbi ( born January 9, 1912 in Cairo, Egypt, † 16 January 2008) was Melkite Greek Catholic Archbishop of Baalbek in Lebanon.

Life

Elias Zoghbi was ordained a priest of the Uniate with the Roman Catholic Church, Melkite Greek Catholic Church on July 20, 1936. 1954 he was instituted by Pope Pius XII. appointed Titular Bishop of Nubia and appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Antioch in Syria. The episcopal ordination donated to him on 21 November 1954, the Patriarch of Antioch Maximos IV Cardinal Saigh and Archbishop Pierre Kamel Medawar and Bishop Dionisio Kfoury. He also served from 1954 to 1968 Patriarchal Vicar of the Greek- Melkite Church in Alexandria (Egypt and Sudan ).

1968 he was appointed Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Baalbek, one of seven dioceses of the Melkite Church in Lebanon. His resignation was accepted in 1988.

Elias Zoghbi became acquainted with the so-called " Zoghbi Initiative", which was approved by the Synod of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church. His publications, such as " Tous Schismatiques? " ( " Are We All Schismatics ?") Or his essays "The Desire for Christian Unity " and " Christian Unity Involves the Whole Church " came across a wider echo. Suzane Aboueid published a biography of Elias Zoghbi with the title " Ecumenical Reflections" at Eastern Christian Publications.

He was buried in St. Paul 's Basilica in Harissa.
